Asthma ranks among the most common chronic conditions in the United State. Over the past 15 years, the number of people afflicted annually with asthma has doubled and the prevalence of asthma continues to rise.
Asthma has become a leading health concern. Linked to environmental and other causes, asthma poses many harmful consequences, many requiring hospitalizations and some deadly, if untreated. Asthma sufferers experience high direct and indirect costs. Direct costs include loss of wages to due to missed work; indirect costs include poor grades for children due to increased absenteeism.
In Logan County, over 10% of all kindergarten through 12th graders use inhalers for asthma; 12.1% of adults report a diagnosis of asthma; and over 15% of high school students have been diagnosed with asthma.
Asthma can be controlled. Trips to the emergency room, restricted physical activities, and a limited quality of life do not have to be the consequences of having asthma. It takes a joint effort between the student with asthma, his or her family, their doctor, and people in the work, school, and health care environments, but by working together it can be done.
